Get a personalized action plan along with 1-on-1 coaching to make mixing pro-quality rock drums easy.
When I first started mixing drums, I remember having no clue what to do with tools like EQ, compression etc.
I had heard that those tools were important, so I’d slap a plugin on my tracks and would immediately go to the presets list to find settings to make my tracks sound better.
After all, if I put a preset named “kick” on my kick drum tracks, it should make it sound better, right?
But what I quickly discovered was more often than not, it actually would make my tracks sound worse.
Often the drums would sound harsh, thin, and not cut through my mixes. I didn’t get it…
I remember thinking “These are the settings that pros are using??? Why do they sound like garbage?”
It wasn’t until I realized how presets were made, that it made sense...
In order to make a preset, you need some sort of source material to work off of…
And then based on that song, quality of the recordings, the instruments used, etc., an engineer will dial in settings to make their tracks sound good.
Ultimately their settings for that song become the preset.
But here’s the big problem…
Your songs don’t sound like that!
You are working with different music, arrangements, musicians, microphones, drum kits, etc.
And because of that, you can’t expect that a preset someone else made for their mix, will work in yours.
(Spoiler alert… it won’t. And if it did, we would all be using that preset and everyone would have perfect sounding drums)
It’s the only way to achieve the clarity and energy your songs deserve.
Unsure of how?
